Susan Muccigrosso welcomes us to our first Luncheon and Opera Preview October 25th

Vice President of Events, Susan Muccigrosso greets guests and members at first luncheon featuring Nick Fox, Portland Opera’s new Assisstant Conductor and Chorus Master, along with Nicole Haslett, Portland Opera Resident Artist, giving us a preview of Richard Strauss and his opera Salome.

Columbia Edgewater Country Club’s golf course provided a scenic backdrop to our lunch and learn experience. The fireworks started when Nick took us through the intense drama Strauss brought to the opera through both voice and orchestration. He described the shock that the 1905 opera generated at its premier, but a century later, it is recognized as a 20th century masterpiece, though it’s never lost its power to shock (and thrill) its audience.

Not seen at Portland Opera for over 20 years, an all-new production will be created by director Stephen Lawless. Sung in German with English translations projected above the stage.

In the title role is soprano Kelly Cae Hogan who appears regularly as Gerhilde in Die Walküre at the Metropolitan Opera. Of her Salome, Opera Now declared, “lovely Kelly Cae Hogan’s powerful voice carried the drama.” Also making their Company debuts are tenor Alan Woodrow as Herod and mezzo soprano Rosalind Plowright as Herodias.
