Angela Meade to Sing Norma in Portland

Last August, Portland SummerFest brought a stellar cast to our city, led by Centralia, WA native, soprano Angela Meade, to sing Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece, Otello. What can the Rose City’s Opera in the Park sponsor do for an encore, you ask? The answer is – invite her back to sing Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma! Indeed, it would not be wrong to state that Norma’s dramatic and most notable aria, Casta diva, is the music that launched Ms. Meade’s fabulous international career.

Joining the northwest’s reigning diva for this performance is a stellar cast, including another local favorite, baritone Richard Zeller, in the role of the Druid high priest, Oroveso, and tenor Allan Glassman, as Norma’s husband (and Adalgisa’s lover), Pollione. Both these singers have sung on the Met stage and appeared in last summer’s production. The luscious voices of mezzo-soprano Carla Dirlikov (as Adalgisa) and soprano Elizabeth Baldwin (as Clothilde), a 2012 MONC National Semi-Finalist, will also be heard. Maestro Keith Clark will once again lead the orchestra and chorus.

Only a single performance of the opera is scheduled: on Friday, August 8 beginning at 6 pm at the Washington Park amphitheater, just adjacent to the Rose Gardens. Bring your families, your friends and your blankets, picnic chairs, and food (and wine) to Portland’s most celebrated summer event.

An event of this magnitude does not come without cost: please consider making a contribution to Portland SummerFest so that they might keep fabulous summer opera coming to our city. Visit www.portlandsummerfest.org and click on “support” to do your part.
